The Black History Month Marketplace
Showcasing the Walsall Windrush Sisters at the BHM Marketplace
The Walsall Windrush Sisters Project joined a wide range of community organisations at this year’s Black History Month Marketplace at Walsall Council Civic Centre. The event created a dynamic space for sharing heritage, celebrating identity, and engaging residents in the stories that shape Walsall’s cultural landscape.
Throughout the day, visitors spent time exploring the project’s work and learning more about the Caribbean women whose lives, labour, and legacy continue to influence the borough. Those conversations sparked real enthusiasm; many people expressed interest in volunteering with the project, contributing family histories, or involving relatives whose stories deserve to be recorded.
A significant number of attendees also chose to visit the Walsall Windrush Sisters exhibition at Walsall Library after leaving the marketplace, eager to see the women’s stories brought to life.
Participating alongside other local groups reinforced the strength of collective storytelling. Each organisation contributed its own perspective, creating an environment where history felt connected, accessible, and rooted in lived experience.
The day added meaningful momentum to the project and reaffirmed the strong community appetite for preserving and celebrating heritage.
