The Commemorative Book
Discover the stories that helped shape Walsall
The Walsall Windrush Sisters commemorative book brings together powerful testimonies, historical research, and treasured photographs, capturing the lives of African Caribbean women in their own words.
Created with care and urgency, it preserves stories that have too often been left out of official records, offering something lasting for families, schools, researchers and the wider community.
Across ten chapters, the book follows the journeys of women who arrived in Walsall between the 1950s and 1970s. It tells not just where they came from, but how they built lives here, with courage, resilience and determination.
It begins with The Arrival, exploring why these women came to the UK, what they hoped for, and what they found when they got to Walsall. Through personal stories, alongside letters, passports and ship records, their experiences are brought to life.
Making a Home looks at the realities of finding somewhere to live, from discrimination to difficult conditions, but also the ways women created warmth, safety and community. Shared homes, supportive neighbours and informal networks became the foundations of belonging.
In Working Women, we see the vital roles African Caribbean women played across Walsall in the NHS, in factories, and in public services. These stories reflect both their contribution and the challenges they faced, showing strength, skill and perseverance in workplaces that didn’t always value them.

Raising the Future shifts focus to family life, exploring the education system through the eyes of Caribbean mothers. It highlights the barriers their children faced, but also the fierce love, advocacy and determination that drove them to push for better.
From Churches to Culture celebrates the richness of Caribbean life in Walsall. Faith, food, music and celebration became ways to hold onto identity and create joy, while churches and community gatherings offered connection, comfort and a sense of home.
Chapter six, Fighting Back, traces the beginnings of the Walsall Black Sisters Collective, formed in response to racism, isolation and inequality, and the powerful role women played in creating spaces for support, resistance and change.
That journey continues in Political Voices, where grassroots activism grows into influence and representation. It highlights Black women who stepped into leadership, challenged systems and helped shape local decision-making.
Health, Healing and Mental Strength focuses on wellbeing, exploring how women cared for one another through illness, stress and stigma. It shows the importance of community, shared understanding and culturally rooted ways of healing.

The final chapters, Building Legacies and We Are Still Here, look at what these women have created and what continues today. They reflect on the changes made possible through their efforts, while bringing in the voices of younger generations: daughters, granddaughters and those continuing the work. Through reflection, poetry and personal stories, these chapters speak to both survival and growth.
Together, these stories form a powerful reminder of everything these women have overcome, built and passed on, and why their voices matter, now more than ever.
