A project made possible by The Heritage Lottery Fund
Walsall Black Sisters Collective is proud to acknowledge the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund in making the Walsall Windrush Sisters project possible.
Thanks to National Lottery players, this important heritage initiative is helping to preserve, celebrate and share the stories of African Caribbean women of the Windrush generation who made Walsall their home and helped shape the borough’s social, cultural and community life. Their experiences, contributions and achievements form an essential part of Walsall’s history and identity, yet many of these stories have remained absent from official archives and historical records for far too long.
The Walsall Windrush Sisters project recognises that heritage is not only found in buildings and museums, but also in people, memories, traditions, photographs, oral histories and lived experiences that deserve to be protected and passed on to future generations. Through oral history training, community research, exhibitions and digital archives, this project will ensure that these unique stories are preserved with dignity, care and pride.
Walsall has a rich industrial and community heritage, shaped by generations of people who contributed to the borough through work, activism, faith, creativity and community leadership. The stories of Windrush women are integral to that history and deserve recognition alongside Walsall’s wider heritage and archive collections.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. Their investment in this project demonstrates the importance of protecting underrepresented histories and creating opportunities for communities to reconnect with their heritage.
This project stands as a legacy for Walsall ensuring that the voices, resilience and experiences of Windrush women are remembered, celebrated and accessible for generations to come.
